The Pediatric Surgery Board (PSB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) is seeking director nominees to serve a six-year term beginning September 16, 2024. The PSB comprises of approximately 8-10 members that represent the spectrum of pediatric surgery and are responsible for both initial and continued board certification in pediatric surgery by the ABS. Accordingly, the PSB is responsible for the Pediatric Surgery In-training Examination (PSITE), the Pediatric Surgery Qualifying Examination (PSQE), the Pediatric Surgery Certifying Examination (PSCE) and the Pediatric Surgery Continuous Certification Assessment (PS CCA).
Directors will participate in developing the various examinations and administering the annual oral examination (CE), in addition to focusing on the current priorities and initiatives. The PSB’s current major priorities include the development of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for pediatric surgery.
Directors must be currently certified by the ABS in pediatric surgery. The time commitment is approximately 10 days per year including the oral examination, examination reviews, and biannual retreats, in addition to the various committee responsibilities.
The PSB utilizes a competency-based selection process to optimize its performance. Accordingly, individuals with one or more of the following competencies are sought:
- Pediatric surgery critical care expertise
- Previous ABS volunteer experience
- Practicing at a non-fellowship location
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- Experience with the development and/or implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)
- Experience with exam blueprint redesign
- RRC/ACGME Experience
- Experience with SCORE for Pediatric Surgery (PSCORE)
