ABS Vice President Karen Brasel Awarded Robert Danis Prize by International Society of Surgery

The ABS congratulates Vice President Karen Brasel, M.D., M.P.H., on being the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Robert Danis Prize, awarded by the International Society of Surgery.

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) congratulates Vice President Karen Brasel, M.D., M.P.H., on being the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Robert Danis Prize, awarded by the International Society of Surgery (ISS).

Dr. Brasel was recognized as this year’s award recipient during the International Surgical Week (ISW) 2024 opening ceremony on Aug. 25, 2024, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The award was presented by the King of Malaysia.

According to the ISS, the Robert Danis Prize is awarded to the surgeon who has made the most important and personal contributions to the fields of trauma, burns or critical care. This award is given to the surgeon, author of the most important and personal work in connection with the pathophysiology of trauma care in general.

Dr. Brasel is a nationally recognized leader in the trauma and critical care surgical community. Prior to joining the ABS as vice president, she was a professor of surgery for the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, general surgery residency program director, vice chair of education and professional development, and assistant dean for graduate medical education at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her clinical practice is trauma/critical care and emergency general surgery, and her research focuses on surgical palliative care, ethics, education, and quality of life after trauma. Dr. Brasel maintains a part-time clinical role at OHSU in addition to her role as vice president of the ABS.
